Carbon...Why So Important?
Carbon seems pretty simple and just like the rock shown in the picture above. The abilities of carbon are far more then meets the eye. Ms. Navabi stated that carbon is the building blocks of life as well as that we are all carbon-based life forms. The reason that life can be called carbon-based life is due to the fact that all life forms are built on carbon.
Cells contain 72% water and 25% carbon compounds such as carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and proteins, which are all macro molecules (large molecules).
The carbon atom is very versatile due to its ability to have 4 stable covalent bonds. Thus allowing the making of different organic compounds (hydrocarbons) as well as macro molecules, which are known as the building blocks of life as well.
